How do I insert the menstrual disc with the NEYA applicator?
Inserting a menstrual disc with the NEYA applicator is simple. Our applicator works with our period disc and is compatible with most brands on the market (no lubricant required).
Step 1: Fold & Load
Fold the NEYA menstrual disc in half and insert it into our applicator.
Step 2: Insert
Gently push the applicator into the vaginal canal—just like a tampon. You’ll feel a click when it’s in place.
Step 3: Remove the Applicator
- Once inserted, gently pull out the applicator. Your disc stays put and does the rest.
Step 4: Rinse, Store & Reuse
- Rinse your disc with soap and water. Then let it dry and store it in your NEYA travel case until next time.
Is the NEYA applicator compatible with other menstrual discs?
Absolutely! The NEYA applicator is designed to work with the NEYA disc and most other reusable menstrual discs. As long as the disc has a flexible rim that can be folded and fits within the applicator’s opening, it should be compatible. NEYA securely holds the fold and guides insertion smoothly—no matter which disc you use. No lubricant is required.
Please note that the applicator does NOT work with menstrual cups. It is only compatible with period discs.
Is it safe to wear a menstrual disc overnight or while swimming?
Yes, it’s totally safe to wear a menstrual disc overnight and while swimming. Menstrual discs are designed to be worn for up to 12 hours, offering leak protection whether you're sleeping, working out in the gym, or in the water.
How to insert a menstrual disc (for beginners?)
Inserting a menstrual disc for the first time can feel intimidating, but it’s easier than it sounds—especially with the NEYA applicator. Here are some tips:
Wash Your Hands First: Always start with clean hands to maintain hygiene.
Fold the Period Disc: Gently pinch the sides of the disc together to create a narrow "taco" shape.
Load (if using NEYA Applicator): Place the folded disc into the applicator inserter for a secure hold.
Insert: Either use the applicator or your fingers to angle the disc back and slightly downward into the vaginal canal.
Tuck It In: Once inside, use a finger to push the front rim up behind the pubic bone. This secures it in place.
You’ll know it’s inserted properly if it feels comfortable and you don’t notice it. With a little practice, it becomes second nature—and using the NEYA applicator makes that learning curve so much easier!
Are menstrual discs safe?
Yes—menstrual discs are totally safe to use when used as directed. Most are made from medical-grade silicone, which is the same body-safe material used in medical devices and approved by the FDA. You can wear them for up to 12 hours, even overnight or while swimming.
Research (like a 2021 review in The Lancet Public Health) shows that reusable period products like discs are not only safe, but also eco-friendly and cost-effective. Even major health organizations, like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), agree that internal products like discs are a safe option.
At NEYA, our disc and applicator are made from 100% medical-grade silicone—no toxins, no BPA, and totally vegan and cruelty-free. Just clean it properly between uses, and you’re good to go.
If you have questions about what’s right for your body, a quick check-in with your healthcare provider is always a smart move.
What’s the difference between a menstrual disc and a menstrual cup?
While both are reusable period products, the key differences come down to where they sit and how they work. A menstrual cup sits lower in the vaginal canal and uses suction to stay in place, while a menstrual disc rests higher up, near the cervix, and tucks behind the pubic bone without creating suction. Discs often hold more fluid than cups, making them a great option for heavier flows. Another big difference? You can have penetrative sex while wearing a disc, which isn’t possible with a cup. Cups typically have a stem for removal, while discs are removed by hooking a finger under the rim—or, in NEYA’s case, by using a convenient removal string. Many people find discs more comfortable and less noticeable, especially if they’ve struggled with the fit or suction of a cup.
Can you have sex with a menstrual disc?
Yes! One of the biggest benefits of a menstrual disc is that it can be worn during penetrative vaginal sex. Unlike menstrual cups, which sit lower and create suction, discs rest higher in the vaginal canal and typically stay out of the way. Many people (and their partners) say they can’t even feel it. If your disc has a removal string, it may be noticeable to your partner depending on position and sensitivity—but most report little to no discomfort. Just keep in mind: while discs help contain menstrual flow during sex, they are not a form of birth control or STI protection.
Do menstrual discs leak?
They’re designed not to but like anything, period leaks can happen if the disc isn’t placed just right or gets too full. The key is making sure it’s tucked high and the front rim is snug behind your pubic bone. Once it’s in the right spot, most people find discs super reliable. With a bit of practice—or help from the NEYA applicator—it gets way easier and way less messy.
Can you sleep with a menstrual disc?
Yes, you can absolutely sleep with a menstrual disc! Discs are designed to be worn for up to 12 hours, making them a great option for overnight protection. They sit higher in the vaginal canal and hold more fluid than tampons or cups, so you can rest easy without worrying about leaks. Just be sure to empty and rinse the disc in the morning, and you're good to go.
How long can I wear a menstrual disc?
Most discs can be worn for up to 12 hours before emptying, depending on your flow. Many people find they only need to change it twice a day—once in the morning and once at night.
How much fluid can a menstrual disc hold compared to other period products?
Menstrual discs typically hold between 30–50 ml of fluid, depending on the brand and size. That’s about 4–6 times more than a regular tampon and 2–3 times more than a standard menstrual cup, making them a great option for heavy flow days.
Can a menstrual disc get stuck?
No, a menstrual disc can’t get permanently stuck. Because it sits in the widest part of the vaginal canal, you can always reach it with your fingers or hook the rim to remove it. If it feels tricky to grab, try bearing down with your pelvic muscles to bring it lower.
Do menstrual discs empty when you pee?
Sometimes, yes it may happen. Many people experience what’s called “auto-dumping”.. which is when your pelvic floor relaxes during urination or a bowel movement, the disc can tip slightly and release some fluid. This is totally normal and can be helpful for those with heavy flow days.
Can you use a menstrual disc with an IUD?
Yes, menstrual discs are generally safe to use with an IUD. They sit lower than the cervix and don’t create suction like menstrual cups do, so they’re less likely to interfere with the IUD strings. If you’ve recently had an IUD placed, check with your healthcare provider before using one.
